Compare paperback trims6 × 9 KDP Paperback Cover Size (White, Cream & Color Paper)
The 6 × 9-inch trim gives each closed-book page a 152.4 × 228.6 mm footprint. Use this reference for an instruction book or a text-focused nonfiction edition whose interior is ready to export. KDP lists this as a regular trim. The worked cases below address two handoffs: a manuscript with an odd file-page total and a color manual with diagrams.
6 × 9 inches: all three paper measurements
Even production counts, with 0.125-inch bleed on every outside edge. Each entry comes from the same calculation used above. Unavailable selections show the actual limit error instead of an invalid cover size.

Freeze the nonfiction interior before the cover handoff
A nonfiction file may include a half title, acknowledgments, table of contents, diagrams and an index beyond the final numbered chapter. Inspect the PDF file total rather than using the last printed page number. The calculation rounds an odd total up to an even production count. Include that normalized value in the note to your cover designer so the layout is reproducible after another export.
For a revised edition, record the old and new counts side by side. An added appendix changes the spine and shifts the front panel relative to the back; it does not add height. Recalculate the horizontal boundaries, preserve each panel’s aspect ratio and compare the fresh official template with the previous layout. Check that an existing background still crosses both folds cleanly.
Distinguish a color cover from a color manual
Choose premium or standard color because the interior is printed in that option. A photograph on the cover does not turn a black-ink interior into a premium-color book. A technical manual containing color-coded diagrams should be evaluated in the intended interior print option, with a proof to establish whether the diagrams remain understandable. This size calculation only establishes geometry; it cannot assess color or legibility.
For a black-ink business guide, white and cream are both listed selections with different maximum counts and thickness factors. Keep the exact selection in every handoff filename or project note. The cream column can become unavailable before white at high counts. A numeric spine taken from another stock is not interchangeable merely because the trim and title match.
Two 6 × 9 inches layout calculations
199-page nonfiction PDF with an even production total
An assumed 199-page file becomes 200 production pages. Use the normalized total when requesting a cover template. The additional production page changes the binding measurement; it is not an instruction to add a new visible chapter page yourself.
Spine 0.4504 in (11.44 mm); full cover 12.7004 × 9.25 in (322.59 × 234.95 mm); 3810 × 2775 pixels at 300 PPI.

240-page premium-color instruction manual
This assumed manual uses premium-color white stock, so its coefficient differs from standard color. The closed-page height stays nine inches. Check the printed diagrams separately: a correctly sized PDF does not establish color matching or readable annotations.
Spine 0.5633 in (14.307 mm); full cover 12.8133 × 9.25 in (325.457 × 234.95 mm); 3844 × 2775 pixels at 300 PPI.

Planning questions for this trim
Should I enter 199 or 200 for a 6 × 9 PDF with 199 file pages?
Enter the 199 manuscript pages. The tool displays the normalized 200-page production count and uses 200 for the spine. Reconcile that count with the final KDP upload before finishing the wrap.
Why is the premium-color manual wider than a standard-color version?
The per-page paper factor is 0.002347 inches for premium and 0.002252 for standard. At the same final count the panels keep their trim dimensions, but the binding strip changes width.
Will adding an index increase the height of my nonfiction cover?
Changing only the final page count changes the horizontal spine contribution. A 6 × 9 paperback still has a 9.25-inch full cover height including outer bleed. Recalculate width and move fold guides.
