Compare paperback trims5 × 8 KDP Paperback Cover Size (White, Cream & Color Paper)
A 5 × 8-inch paperback closes to a compact 127 × 203.2 mm page. This reference focuses on portable, text-led layouts: a small poetry collection and a longer novel. Neither the closed-book width nor a front-cover image is the full PDF canvas. The back panel and page-dependent spine need space beside the front, with bleed around the outside.
5 × 8 inches: all three paper measurements
Even production counts, with 0.125-inch bleed on every outside edge. Each entry comes from the same calculation used above. Unavailable selections show the actual limit error instead of an invalid cover size.

Start with the reading layout of a compact edition
Reflow the interior before asking a designer to size the wrap. Reducing a larger manuscript to this trim can add lines and pages; a final count from the previous edition therefore gives the wrong spine. Check chapter openings, running heads and intentional blank pages in the exported interior. A poetry collection also needs deliberate line breaks: shrinking the page should not silently wrap a carefully composed verse.
The smaller front panel leaves less room for a long title. Design a readable title at the finished physical width first, then place that design within the full wrap. Treat the back-cover blurb and barcode as separate blocks. Do not make the cover feel larger by borrowing space across the spine fold; binding movement can turn that shortcut into a visibly off-center title.
A paper switch changes the portable novel’s binding area
Cream is an available black-ink interior choice here. It changes the width between the two panels, even though their height remains fixed. If the page count is unchanged, compare the white and cream cells on the same table row. Move the front panel and spine guides to the new positions rather than uniformly stretching artwork. Keep the original illustration proportions and review any background pattern at the joins.
Premium color is a distinct printing selection. It may matter for a compact illustrated collection, but a colored cover alone is no reason to select it: the ink option describes the interior. Standard color is also selectable in the calculator and shares white-paper geometry, while its minimum count is higher. Verify that the actual publishing setup allows the chosen paper and count before saving a design reference.
Two 5 × 8 inches layout calculations
48-page poetry booklet without spine lettering
This assumed black-ink booklet is below the tool’s 80-production-page lettering gate. Put the title on the front panel and leave the narrow spine free of type. Count the contents and blank versos in the interior PDF; 48 refers to file pages, not 48 sheets.
Spine 0.1081 in (2.746 mm); full cover 10.3581 × 8.25 in (263.096 × 209.55 mm); 3107 × 2475 pixels at 300 PPI.

320-page cream-paper pocket novel
This longer text edition uses the cream coefficient. Request the matching cream template before positioning the title across the spine. A white-paper file with the same number of pages would put the fold at a different horizontal location; resizing the whole completed wrap would also distort the front artwork.
Spine 0.8 in (20.32 mm); full cover 11.05 × 8.25 in (280.67 × 209.55 mm); 3315 × 2475 pixels at 300 PPI.

Planning questions for this trim
Can a short 5 × 8 poetry collection carry a spine title?
The 48-page example cannot under this tool’s conservative 80-production-page rule. Keep the book title on the front. Even above that threshold, usable lettering width depends on paper, clearance and readable type size.
Does moving my novel to a pocket trim preserve its page count?
Only if the finished interior actually has the same number of file pages. Reflow at 5 × 8, export, inspect all front and back matter, and then calculate the cover. A count from a larger edition is not a substitute.
Which guide moves when I switch a compact edition from white to cream?
The spine width and the start of the front panel move. The 5-inch panel widths and 8-inch finished height stay fixed. Obtain a new official template and reposition guides without scaling the artwork.
