How is an ISBN-13 check digit calculated before creating a barcode?
For ISBN-13, multiply the first twelve digits alternately by 1 and 3. The check digit = (10 − (weighted sum modulo 10)) modulo 10. This tool formats an assigned 978/979 ISBN, excluding 9790, as EAN-13 SVG with an optional five-digit supplement. A valid checksum does not establish ownership or certify print scanning.
Use an ISBN assigned to your own edition. The 9790 prefix belongs to ISMN. The SVG download is free. The planned ISBN SVG + CMYK TIFF pack has no checkout; paperback PSD files and other paid tools are separate products. Review barcode size, quiet zones and the final printed cover.

How an assigned ISBN becomes a vector barcode
This ISBN-13 barcode generator encodes an existing book identifier; it does not issue a new one. Enter all thirteen assigned digits, including the check digit. Spaces and hyphens are allowed for input convenience, then removed for validation. Letters, missing digits and unsupported prefixes produce an error instead of a guessed correction or an incomplete barcode.
S = d1 + 3d2 + d3 + 3d4 + … + 3d12(10 − (S mod 10)) mod 105 followed by four price digits in centsWeights alternate one and three across the first twelve digits, starting with one. The thirteenth must equal the calculated check digit. Passing this arithmetic catches many typing errors but does not validate agency registration or ownership. The accepted book prefixes are 978 and 979, excluding 979-0 because that identifies ISMN music publications. An ordinary retail EAN cannot be converted into an ISBN just by drawing different bars.
The main symbol has 95 modules. This export uses a module width, or X dimension, of 0.330 millimeters and main bars 22.85 millimeters high. Its minimum blank zones are 11X on the left and 7X on the right without a supplement. With EAN-5, the main to supplement gap is 12X and the right zone is 5X. The opaque white background is part of the artwork.
The generated file is SVG vector artwork, not a 300 DPI bitmap. Physical dimensions are embedded in millimeters, while paths describe the bars. Keep the complete canvas and its proportions when placing it. Additional canvas space means the exported width is larger than the raw bar pattern. Check the actual download dimensions rather than estimating them from a browser preview or applying a blanket pixel density conversion.
Validate the identifier, choose a supplement and inspect the SVG
Start with the assignment record for the edition you are publishing. Copy the full ISBN from that record and compare it with the identifier in your publishing setup. Do not copy a barcode from another book or use this tool's sample for publication. If a check digit fails, return to the record and correct the transcription rather than replacing the last digit merely to satisfy the checksum.
Choose the supplement before designing the back cover. The default 90000 adds a five digit symbol without an encoded price. No supplement omits that symbol entirely. The USD option accepts $0.01 through $99.98 and encodes cents in the supported 5xxxx range. Use the price expected on the cover, with at most two decimal places; this field is not a royalty estimate or a currency converter.
Inspect the preview and the reported physical size. With no supplement, this implementation exports a 50.8 millimeter wide canvas. With either supported supplement mode, it is 56.1 millimeters wide. That wider output needs its own reserved area. Download the SVG and open it in software that preserves vector dimensions. Keep the white background, full bar height and blank margins, including the spacing before the add-on.
Place the image without independent horizontal or vertical stretching. KDP's barcode guidance describes a recommended 2 × 1.2 inch area and a minimum 1.4 × 0.8 inch area, plus clearance from trim and spine. Those box measurements do not authorize compressing any barcode into any box. This supplemented SVG is wider than two inches; reserve its actual size and check the official template instead of forcing it to match that recommendation.
After exporting the complete cover PDF, inspect the placed symbol again. Confirm that the ISBN and supplement match your records, no neighboring artwork enters the white margins, and the layout software did not crop the canvas. Calculations and SVG generation run in the browser. If you copy a setup URL, its query values are transmitted with the page request and may appear in logs; a link is not private ISBN registration verification.
Eight calculated USD supplement examples
The table demonstrates this interface's supported USD price mapping. Each amount is converted to whole cents, padded to four digits and preceded by five. These are encoding examples, not book prices that this site recommends, observed retail listings or proof of ISBN assignment. They leave the thirteen digit book identifier unchanged and affect only the optional EAN-5 symbol.
| USD cover price | Cents | EAN-5 value |
|---|---|---|
| $0.01 | 1 | 50001 |
| $0.99 | 99 | 50099 |
| $1.00 | 100 | 50100 |
| $9.99 | 999 | 50999 |
| $12.50 | 1250 | 51250 |
| $19.95 | 1995 | 51995 |
| $49.99 | 4999 | 54999 |
| $99.98 | 9998 | 59998 |
For example, nineteen dollars and ninety five cents becomes 1995 cents, then 51995. A dollar becomes 0100 in the four digit price portion, giving 50100. The zeros carry meaning; do not drop them when recording the supplement in a production note. The generator handles that padding, while the user still needs to choose the correct mode and amount. Compare this field with the agreed cover price before handing artwork to another person.
The endpoints are deliberate limits of this implementation. Zero dollars, $99.99, higher price bands and other currencies are not supported price entries. No supplement and 90000 remain separate alternatives. BISG guidance includes rules beyond the choices offered here, so an unsupported value should be resolved with the trading partner rather than squeezed into a similar looking code. Regenerate the image after changing the price and remove any stale version from the cover artwork.
Check three barcode decisions before placement
Checking the complete demonstration identifier
The tool's demonstration number is 9781873671009 and is not supplied for your publication. For its first twelve digits, the alternating weighted terms are 9, 21, 8, 3, 8, 21, 3, 18, 7, 3, 0 and 0. Their sum is 101. The remainder after division by ten is one, so the check digit is nine. This confirms the demonstration's checksum only. Replacing the last digit with eight makes it fail; it does not create a different assigned book identifier. Always replace the sample with your own edition's record before downloading publication artwork.
Encoding a nineteen dollar ninety five cent price
Assume your trading partner requests a USD price supplement of $19.95. Multiply by 100 to obtain 1995 cents, then prefix five to obtain 51995. The ISBN remains the same, but the generated symbol includes the add-on and a 12X gap. At X = 0.330 millimeters, that gap is 3.96 millimeters. The total exported width is 56.1 millimeters. Record the ISBN and supplement separately so a later price revision does not accidentally change the identifier or leave an old five digit value in the final cover PDF.
Planning enough physical width
Without EAN-5, the minimum module span is 11 + 95 + 7 = 113 modules, or 37.29 millimeters at this X dimension. The exported canvas adds space to reach 50.8 millimeters. With the supplement, the span is 11 + 95 + 12 + 47 + 5 = 170 modules, or 56.1 millimeters. Squeezing that width into 50.8 millimeters would reduce the horizontal scale to about 90.55 percent while leaving height unchanged if stretched independently. Preserve the full SVG size instead. This is a placement calculation, not a printed scan test or certification of a particular printer.
Preserve margins and separate validation from ownership
Never turn a failed check digit into a guessed identifier. A mathematically valid number can still belong to another publisher or edition. Equally, spaces and hyphens are formatting aids rather than encoded content: this tool does not infer official publisher hyphenation. Retain the assignment record separately and compare the plain thirteen digits with the publishing account.
Keep high contrast bars on the provided white background. Cropping the blank border to make the artwork look tighter removes space needed by the symbol. Avoid placing a textured image behind it, reducing only its width, or converting it to a small screenshot. If your workflow requires raster output, choose pixels based on the final physical size and inspect the export rather than assuming an SVG has a fixed DPI.
Use the paperback cover calculator to establish the surrounding canvas, then check the current official barcode placement instructions. The cover's safe area and the barcode's quiet zones answer different questions. A digital preview or successful checksum cannot establish printed quality. Ask the printer or distributor how they verify final symbols, and review the complete exported cover before submitting it.
ISBN artwork questions before printing
01Does a valid check digit prove that I own an ISBN?
No. The checks confirm supported syntax, a 978 or 979 book prefix, exclusion of the 979-0 music range, and the checksum. They do not query an agency, identify a publisher allocation or establish ownership. Use the ISBN assigned to the exact edition by your agency or publishing platform. Never publish the demonstration ISBN as your own.
02Can I omit the barcode from a KDP cover?
KDP can add a barcode when you do not supply one. If you supply your own artwork, make its ISBN match the book's assigned identifier and follow the current placement requirements. This SVG generator is optional. Generating a file here does not certify that a particular cover, identifier allocation or printed barcode will be accepted.
03Are no supplement and 90000 the same choice?
No. No supplement creates only the main EAN-13 symbol. The 90000 option adds an EAN-5 symbol indicating that no price is encoded. A price option adds a different five digit value. Ask the retailer, distributor or printer which is expected before generating artwork, because an added supplement changes the required width.
04Why are $99.99 and other currencies unavailable?
This version deliberately supports only USD $0.01 through $99.98. It does not interpret 59999 as an encoded $99.99 price; BISG describes that code as a legacy higher price indication. Other price ranges and currencies are outside this interface. Choose 90000 when no price is encoded, if that matches your trading partner's requirements.
05Should I convert the SVG to a 300 DPI image?
The exported bars are vector paths with an embedded physical size, so the SVG itself has no fixed pixel resolution. Keep it as vector artwork when your design workflow supports that. If raster output is required, export at sufficient pixels for the final physical size without cropping or stretching. A digital decode still cannot certify printed contrast, dimensions or scan quality.
