Amazon KDP Spine Width Formula Guide

Understand KDP paper coefficients, normalized production pages, spine text clearance and the difference between paperback bleed and hardcover wrap.

Use the right page count and paper coefficient

Spine width depends on the final production page count and the paper/ink choice. KDP’s paperback cover help lists 0.002252 inches per page for black ink on white paper and standard color, 0.002500 for black ink on cream paper, and 0.002347 for premium color. These are KDP-specific coefficients, not universal measurements for all stocks sold by a print shop.

The formula is spine width in inches = production pages × paper coefficient. Convert the unrounded result to millimeters by multiplying by 25.4. Multiply the same unrounded inches by the target PPI to obtain a raster reference. Do not start from a rounded millimeter number when calculating a second representation.

For a 200-page white-paper book, the paperback spine is 0.4504 inches, or 11.44016 mm. Cream paper produces 0.5 inches, or 12.7 mm. Premium color produces 0.4694 inches, or 11.92276 mm. All three books have the same page count; changing paper changes the spine and the full cover width.

Odd manuscript pages round up

According to KDP’s paperback submission instructions, an odd manuscript page count is rounded up to an even production count. A 199-page manuscript therefore uses 200 for the cover calculation. Confirm the count after the final manuscript is uploaded; adding or removing front matter can change it. The live tool displays both counts when they differ.

Paperback full cover dimensions

A single wrap-around paperback cover contains back panel, spine and front panel. Width is 2 × trim width + spine + 0.25 in. Height is trim height + 0.25 in. The 0.25-inch total represents 0.125-inch bleed at both outer sides of each axis. There is no extra cut edge between the back panel, spine and front panel.

At 6 × 9-inch trim and 200 white-paper production pages, the full cover measures 12.7004 × 9.25 inches. It rounds to 3810 × 2775 pixels at 300 PPI. A PDF should retain the intended physical geometry rather than replacing it with a pixel-derived width rounded to a different physical value. Artwork and text guides must be removed before production submission.

6 × 9 in paperback, 300 PPI. Page counts shown are even production counts. Hardcover uses different board, hinge and wrap geometry; only 75–550 production pages in verified trims.

Spine text: the 79/80 boundary

The official paperback cover page uses “at least 79” in its introduction and text section, but “more than 79” under spine text. It also specifies 80 for Cover Creator. FilePrepLab shows this discrepancy and applies the even production count: 79 manuscript pages normalize to 80, while 78 stay below the gate. Do not treat this tool as permission to ignore the current official template or preview warning.

The text must fit after leaving 0.0625 inches on either side of the spine. For a 200-page white-paper paperback that leaves 0.3254 inches across the spine. This is the width perpendicular to the spine’s long axis, not the height of an entire line along the spine. Type style, weight, orientation and legibility still need a proof.

Case-laminate hardcover is a different construction

The hardcover option accounts for boards, hinges and material that wraps around the case. Its reference calculation adds 4.8 mm to the paper-block spine, expands each board width by 5 mm and board height by 6 mm, and allows 15 mm outer wrap per side. A 10 mm hinge region on each panel is kept clear of important content.

Reference overall width is twice the enlarged board width plus case spine plus twice wrap. Reference height is enlarged board height plus twice wrap. This differs from adding a case spine to paperback trim and bleed. KDP’s hardcover guidance contains an inconsistent imperial/metric wrap label, so local sample checks use the actual official calculator output rather than silently equating those labels.

For 200 white-paper pages and 6 × 9 trim, the official table reports a 0.639-inch case spine and a 14.214 × 10.417-inch full cover. Four sample configurations covering white, cream, premium, different trims and boundary-adjacent counts were compared at the official table’s three-decimal precision on October 15, 2026. This demonstrates agreement for those samples; it is not a universal print-acceptance certification.

Validate paper and page eligibility first

The selected hardcover trims support 75–550 production pages and exclude standard color. Paperback maximums vary: 6 × 9 cream and 8.5 × 11 cream do not share the same upper limit. The current KDP trim table is the authority. Custom paperback sizes that have not been matched to a verified preset are labeled as dimensional estimates.

Keep the original paperback calculator and interior bleed calculator available for their existing tasks. The interior has three-edge bleed, whereas this cover consists of two panels and a spine. Changing the interior file size to the full cover size is never the correct handoff.

IngramSpark and other printers

A matching trim and page count do not establish matching paper caliper, binding, case boards or barcode position. Obtain the actual service’s template for the selected stock and binding. KDP coefficients are deliberately not used to produce an IngramSpark template here.

Download a useful reference, then finalize with KDP

The local SVG/PDF guide is a working reference with visible boundaries. It contains no finished cover artwork and is not an official template. Place it on a separate layer, align your design and remove all guides before export. For an official production template, enter the final details in KDP’s own generator and inspect the resulting proof.
